Linguistic theory

Lexical Functional Grammar

I have been a strong proponent for Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG), a declarative approach to grammar where different types of linguistic information are captured at independent, interacting dimensions.

LFG for language change

Together with Miriam Butt, I have written an overview paper which outlines the rich possibilities which LFG offers for modelling different types of language change. This was published in a recent handbook of LFG.

LFG for discourse expletives

I have recently explored how contemporary syntactic theory can handle discourse-related expletives, which pose a number of challenges. The survey included a look at the various opportunities within LFG.

LFG for word order flexibility

In various papers I have showed the opportunities that LFG offers for modelling languages with syntactically flexible, pragmatically conditioned word order, as well as subtles changes over time.
